Sammendrag
A slow data rate system may be used to extend the range of communication systems or for use as emergency beacons by first responders. This project will investigate use of a slow data rate wireless system in a severe multipath environment. Specifically we deploy our system in a mining tunnel located in the San Francisco Bay area. A theoretical assessment of signal propagation in this environment is discussed. We use a low cost communications module to derive propagation information for the tunnel. Also, by laboratory experiments and the field test we will show an example of how a very narrow bandwidth distress signal may be resolved using simple post processing techniques. We relate the measurements to theory through electromagnetic wave propagation and Shannon s information theory.
