dc.description.abstract | Grid cells in the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) and place cells in the hippocampus are key
elements of the brain's spatial representation system. These cell populations are the basic
component of the circuit of spatial navigation and memory. Although the projections from MEC
to hippocampus have been studied for half century, the function of these spatial inputs from
MEC to hippocampus is not well understood.
In the first project, we examined the types of the spatial cells from MEC that directly project to
hippocampus, which help us to understand the basis of the information that build the
hippocampal spatial maps. We found that all types of the spatial cells from MEC, including grid
cells, border cells, head direction cells and non-classified spatial cells were contributing to the
hippocampal network.
In the second project, we studied the function of these MEC inputs on the hippocampal network.
Through pharmacogentic and optogenetic methods, we examined the change of place cells after
selectively inhibition of discrete parts of MEC along dorsal to ventral axis. We found different
effect on the remapping of place cells after inhibition of dorsal and ventral MEC, indicating the
combination of grid modules with different spacing might be the key to decide the field location
of place cells.
In the third project, we challenge the spatial memory of the rats, through recoding the CA3 place
cells in 11 different rooms. We found the distinct spatial representation of the CA3 assembles
within the 11 rooms, suggesting the enormously high storage capacity of the spatial memory in
CA3. | nb_NO |
dc.description.abstract | Sammendrag:
elementer i hjernens representasjonssystem for rom.
romlige kartene i hippocampus.
stedceller i CA3, i 11 forskjellige rom. Vi fant at CA3-cellene gav distinkte romlige
for romlig hukommelse i CA3. | nb_NO |
