H: In connection with the expansion of European road 6 between Moelv-Biri, a new bridge structure it is planned crossing the Mjøsa lake. Norwegian Public Roads Administration, in cooperation with Ringsaker and Gjøvik municipalities, conducted impact assessment as part of the municipality plan adopted in 2011. Design assumptions and design reports for the project have been performed. They follow up two line options for where the bridge will be located, and prepared seven solutions for the design of the bridge. Five of the proposals are concrete bridges, while two of the proposals are wooden bridges. The planned bridge structure has a total length of approx. 1500 meters. One of the wooden bridge options is planned as a cable-stayed bridge with three towers and two mid-spans of 120 meters. The remaining side spans are estimated at 69 meters. The supporting structure must be designed as a continuous underlying truss, made of glue-laminated wood. The overlying concrete slab must be designed with static interaction with the truss. The length of spans, the large temperature variations and the depths of seabed make this a project that pushes the limits of what is possible to achieve with today's technology. The research question of this article is: «Is a timber-concrete composite structure a good option for the design of the new bridge crossing Mjøsa? » This task will be a feasibility analysis. The wooden bridge option presupposes timberconcrete composite action. To answer the hypothesis we shall therefore study timber-concrete composite theory and research on various shear connectors. We will also design one free span of the bridge. The design includes the appropriate load situations, glue laminated truss, concrete slab and dowel connectors. Finally, we will consider the environmental impact of the two materials [...].
