Abstract
Through a participatory and rights-based approach, this research aims to give a stage to the voices of children, providing valuable insights into their lived experiences and fostering a deeper understanding of their perspectives on the notion of home. This research is positioned within the field of Childhood Studies, which advocates for a methodological approach to research with children instead of research on children. A participatory approach gives the children from which we want to learn a chance to be heard and furthermore a chance to utilize their right to participation. This research will aim to include children’s participation rights by making use of participatory methods during the data collection. Participatory methods are helpful for the reason that it enables children to express themselves in different ways, bringing the researcher into their world and experiences of life. The methods used are brainstorm sessions; semi-structured interviews; ranking; photovoice and written diary. The participants of this research consists out of two groups, one of which were children between the ages 12 and 17 and the second of young adults between the ages of 21 and 25 years old. This research has drawn on a variety of research-based theories and approaches that have been considered useful for understanding the research objective as well as analysis of the collected data material. These theories and approaches have been drawn from the field of Childhood Studies as well as Geography, complimenting the interdisciplinary nature of the field of Childhood Studies. Concluding this research, I argue that temporality, places, significant individuals and personal belongings are important pillars in the lived realities of the research participants and their notion of home.
