Pedagogisk tilbud på sykehus Foreldrenes erfaringer
Abstract
What experiences do parents with the educational services their child receives or has previously received in the hospital? This study explores this issue through a qualitative research approach with interviews, aiming to gain insight into their experiences and develop a deeper understanding of how the services shape the hospital life of the children and the parents themselves. Four mature parents with preschool children who are or have been hospitalized and have utilized the educational services have expressed their experiences in this context. Based on their statements, the foundation for the analysis was formed with three main categories.
A hospital day with an educational serviceMeeting with the educatorsHospital - Not just a painful place to be
The findings highlighted in chapter four point to several similarities, differences, and personal experiences that the informants have with the educational services their child receives or has previously received. The main reason for the differences seems to be that the children of two of the informants received educational services during the COVID-19 pandemic, which occurred in 2020, resulting in their services apparently being more limited than those expressed by the other two informants. There also appears to be a correlation between the differences and the length of hospital stays experienced by the informants. One informant had experience with the services for ten days, while the other three had experience spanning several weeks and over an extended period. However, despite the differences in the services received, all informants perceive the educational services as highly significant for both the child and themselves. They claim that these services made their hospital stay more manageable than it would have been without them. As they express, without these services, they would have been confined to a small room with a bed, TV, and PlayStation, which they indicate is not sufficient for a small child in the long run. Therefore, the educators facilitating play during the hospital day has a positive impact on their daily life. They believe this helps normalize their routine, and one informant noted that their child recovered more quickly after surgeries. This suggests that play brings joy to the child, encouraging them to get out of bed despite possible pain or discomfort. The findings also show that through the educational services, the child learns that the hospital is not solely a painful place to be, and the kindergarten becomes a sanctuary for both the child and the parents from all the painful experiences at the hospital.
