Oppvekstskildringer i den performative biografismens tid. En lesning av Annie Ernaux' memoar Sommeren 58, Linn Ullmanns roman Jente 1983 og Vigdis Hjorth roman Femten år

Abstract

«Oppvekstskildringer i den performative biografismens tid» undersøker den litterære fremstillingen av oppveksterfaringer til tre jenter på 17, 16 og 15 år, slik de skrives frem i hhv. Annie Ernaux’ Sommeren 58, Linn Ullmanns Jente 1983 og Vigdis Hjorths Femten år. Formidlingen av selve erindringsarbeidet og dets utfordringer er et sentralt fortellergrep i alle tre tekstene, likeledes refleksjonen over egne handlinger og identitet slik den fremstår i den modne fortellerens tilbakeblikk. Jeg har undersøkt hvorvidt og hvordan genrebestemmelsen til de tre tekstene, en memoar og to romaner, plasseres dem i den autofiksjonelle tradisjonen. Jeg har i analysen søkt støtte i Gerard Genettes narratologi for å identifisere formtrekk og tekstenes estetiske kommunikasjon. Jeg har sett på hvordan de tre i egenskap av å være «virkelighetsnære» verk flytter grensene mellom virkelighet og fiksjon når verk og forfatter er tett forbundet, og i forlengelsen av dette, i hvor stor grad den performative biografismen spiller inn på leseropplevelsen. Ved hjelp av en sammenligning i lys av en tematisk, estetisk eller biografisk leserinngang til de tre verkene, kan man se hvordan genrebearbeidelsen kan åpne opp for en nyansert fremstilling av både subjektive og kollektive oppveksterfaringer. Oppvekstskildringene inviterer slik mer allment til identifikasjon utover at de på forskjellige måter som litteratur tilbyr ulike estetiske erfaringer.

“Portraits of growing up in the age of performative biography” examines the literary representation of the growing up experiences of three girls aged 17, 16 and 15, as they are depicted in respectively Annie Ernaux’s Sommeren 58, Linn Ullmann’s Jente 1983 and Vigdis Hjorth’s Femten år. The literary presentation of the work of remembering and its challenges is central both to the narrative and the narrative techniques in the texts, as is the reflection on protagonist’s actions as they appear in the mature narrator’s retrospect. I have focused on how the genre determination of the three texts, a memoir and two novels, places them in the auto-fictional tradition. The analysis draws on Gerard Genette’s narratology to identify form features and the text's aesthetic communication. I have looked at how the three works, in the capacity of being “close to reality”, as the work and the author are closely connected, explore the boundaries between reality and fiction, and the extent to which the performative biography draws on the reader’s knowledge. By means of a comparison in the light of respectively a thematic, aesthetic, or biographical reader’s approach to the three works, one can see how the genre processing can open a nuanced representation of both subjective and collective growing up experiences. The descriptions of growing up thus invite identification more generally, beyond the fact that they offer different aesthetic experiences in different ways as literary fictions.
