Attitudes Towards Code-Switching in Education - A Review of Teachers´ and Students´ Perspectives and Influencing Factors

Abstract

Denne studien setter søkelys på å undersøke holdninger til kodevekslingspraksiser innen utdanning, og å undersøke hvilke faktorer som har blitt funnet å påvirke holdningene til kodeveksling, og på hvilken måte disse faktorene påvirker disse holdningene. Forskningsspørsmålene stilt i denne oppgaven er de følgende: 1) Hva er studenters og læreres holdninger til kodeveksling innen utdanning? og 2) Hvilke faktorer har blitt funnet å påvirke læreres og studenters holdninger til kodeveksling innen utdanning, ifølge tidligere studier, og på hvilken måte? I denne oppgaven har jeg gjennomgått og sammenliknet forskningsstudier publisert det siste tiåret for å besvare mine forskningsspørsmål. Forskningsstudiene består av studier som undersøker studenters holdninger til kodeveksling innen utdanning og studier som undersøker læreres holdninger til kodeveksling innen utdanning. I denne oppgaven er lærernes holdninger generelt til kodeveksling funnet å være negative og studentenes holdninger generelt til kodeveksling er funnet å være positive. Enkelte av faktorene presentert i forskningsstudiene, for eksempel utdanningsretning og språkferdighet i kodene vekslet til, er funnet å påvirke holdningene til kodeveksling.

This thesis focuses on investigating attitudes towards code-switching practices in education, and investigating which factors that are found to influence the attitudes towards code-switching, and in which way these factors influence these attitudes. The research questions asked in this thesis are the following: 1) What are students´ and teachers´ attitudes towards code-switching in education? and 2) Which factors have been found to influence teachers´ and students´ attitudes towards code-switching in education, according to previous studies, and in which way? In this thesis I have reviewed and compared research studies published the last decade in order to answer my research questions. The research studies consist of studies investigating students´ attitudes towards code-switching in education and studies investigating teachers´ attitudes towards code-switching in education. In this thesis the teachers´ attitudes towards code-switching in general are found to be negative and the students´ attitudes towards code-switching in general are found to be positive. Some of the factors presented in the research studies, for instance field of study and proficiency in the codes switched to, are found to affect the attitudes towards code-switching.
