Past or Present Tense: The Trials & Tribulations of the Lost Generation

Abstract

Denne avhandlinga utforsker problemene og utfordringene til litteraturens ‘Fortapte generasjon’, slik som dette gjenspeiles i de litterære verkene The Sun Also Rises (1926) og «A Clean, Well-Lighted Place» (1933) av Ernest Hemingway, samt The Great Gatsby (1925) og «Babylon Revisited» (1931) av F. Scott Fitzgerald. Hovedpoenget med analysen er å forklare hvordan og hvorfor hovedpersonene (med andre) sliter med å finne mening og retning i livet, og da særlig på grunn av fortida. Her argumenterer jeg for at karakterene må forstå hvordan fortid henger sammen med nåtid om de skal kunne gjøre det beste ut av situasjonen de befinner seg i. Videre diskuterer jeg hva det er som gjør disse litterære verkene så relevante og gripende den dag i dag, samt hvorfor den ‘Fortapte generasjon’ står i en særstilling i den litterære kanon, hvor det ikke på noen som helst måte er noe som tyder på at den er fortapt.

This thesis explores the trials and tribulations of the ‘Lost Generation’, as reflected in the literary works The Sun Also Rises (1926) and “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” (1933) by Ernest Hemingway, as well as The Great Gatsby (1925) and “Babylon Revisited” (1931) by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The main point of the analysis is to explain how and why the protagonists (mainly) struggle with finding meaning and purpose in life, particularly due to forces of the past. Here, I argue that the characters must understand the implications of the past in order to lead their lives in the present, so as to do the best out of the cards they are dealt. Moreover, I discuss what makes the subject matter of these literary works so relevant and poignant to this day, and why the Lost Generation occupies such a special place in the literary canon and, as such, appears to be everything but lost.
