"Å late nokon flyte motstraums" - Fiksjonens grenser i Gunnhild Øyehaugs Vonde blomar

Abstract

I denne oppgaven gjør jeg en lesning av Gunnhild Øyehaugs Vonde blomar (2020), og undersøker hvordan fantastikk, metafiksjon og intertekstualitet bidrar til å utforske grensene for fiksjonen i novellesamlinga. Oppgaven tar utgangspunkt i tre overordnede teoretiske perspektiver. Novellesamlingas fantastikk blir belyst av Rosemary Jacksons og Åsfrid Svensens forståelse av det fantastiske som en modus. Videre benyttes Gérard Genettes intertekstualitetsbegrep til å undersøke Vonde blomar sine intertekstuelle relasjoner. Patricia Waughs forståelse av metafiksjon danner grunnlag for oppgavens metafiksjonelle perspektiv. De teoretiske perspektivene benyttes både hver for seg og samlet, slik at ulike sider ved Øyehaugs utforsking av grensene for fiksjonen blir undersøkt.

Utforskingen av fiksjonens grenser i Vonde blomar kommer til uttrykk på flere måter. Novellesamlingas fantastikk bidrar til å stille spørsmål ved, og utvide virkeligheten i fiksjonen. Fiksjonens forhold til virkeligheten blir videre tematisert av de intertekstuelle referansene i novellene, som knytter novellesamlingas fiksjon til virkeligheten på utsiden av fiksjonen. Utforskingen av fiksjonens grenser uttrykkes også ved Vonde blomar sin vektlegging av egen status som fiksjon, som følge av dens metafiksjonelle refleksjoner. I analysen kommer det fram at utforskingen av grensene for fiksjonen i Vonde blomar både fører til et større rom for hva som er mulig innenfor fiksjonen, og et mer nyansert bilde av forholdet mellom fiksjon og virkelighet.

In this thesis I perform a reading of Gunnhild Øyehaugs Vonde blomar (2020), and study how the fantastic, metafiction and intertextuality contribute to exploring the limits of the fiction in this short story collection. The thesis is based on three overarching theoretical perspectives. The fantastic of the short story is elucidated by Rosemary Jackson´s and Åsfrid Svensens understanding of the fantastic as a mode. Further, Genette´s concept of intertextuality is employed for understanding the intertextual relations of Vonde blomar. Patricia Waugh´s understanding of metafiction forms the basis of the paper´s metafictional perspective. The theoretical perspectives are used both separately and in combination, so that various aspects of Øyehaug´s exploration of the limits of the fiction are being studied.

The exploration of the limits of the fiction in Vonde blomar is manifested in several ways. The fantastic of the short story collection contributes to questioning and expanding the reality in the fiction. Also, the relationship of fiction to reality is addressed through the intertextual references of the short stories, which connect the fiction of the short story collection with the reality outside of the fiction. The investigation of the limits of fiction is also expressed through Vonde blomar´s emphasis on its own status as fiction, as a result of its metafictional reflections. The analysis shows that the exploration of the limits of the fiction in Vonde blomar both expands the room for what is possible within the fiction, and contributes to a more nuanced picture of the relationship between fiction and reality.
