The Role of Location and Space at a Local and Global Level in China Miéville’s The City and the City, and Hanya Yanagihara’s To Paradise

Abstract

En analyse og diskusjon om hvordan effekten av steder og områder i fiksjonsbøker kan bidra til å støtte opp under diskusjoner rundt lokale og globale problemstillinger. I oppgaven vil det diskuteres rundt hvordan Hanya Yanagiharas roman "To Paradise" bruker steder til å ta opp globale problemstillinger, i tillegg til en diskusjon rundt hvordan China Miévilles roman "The City and the City" bruker steder for å bygge opp under mer lokale problemstillinger.

An analysis and discussion centered on the effect of spaces and locations in speculative fiction, and how they can play a role in discussions of local and global issues. In this thesis, discussion will be based on Hanya Yanagihara's novel "To Paradise", and how it uses space to focus on global issues. In addition, I will look at how China Miéville's novel "The City and the City" uses space to support themes centered around local issues.
