Hvem skal ta ansvaret ingen egentlig orker? Formidlingen av rollen som mor til et barn med autisme og psykisk utviklingshemning i romanene Tung tids tale (2017) og Yt etter evne, få etter behov (2020)

Abstract

Olaug Nilssens romaner Tung tids tale (2017) og Yt etter evne, få etter behov (2020) handler om det å være mor og pårørende til et barn med autisme og psykisk utviklingshemning. I disse romanene får man kjennskap til mødrenes tanker og følelser knyttet til sønnenes diagnoser, og man får også et innblikk i hvordan hverdagslivet kan se ut når man er mor til et barn med disse diagnosene. I denne bacheloroppgaven ses det derfor nærmere på hvordan Nilssens formidling av rollen som mor til et barn med de nevnte diagnosene kan bidra med innsikt i hvordan det er å være mor til et barn med autisme og psykisk utviklingshemning. Dette gjøres ved å se nærmere på forfatterens bruk av narrative grep i forbindelse med forteller, fokalisering og tidsforløp i romanene, og knytte dette opp mot kunnskap om emosjoner og forventningsteori i forbindelse med omsorgshandlinger. Som et resultat av dette kan romanene sies å bidra med innsikt i at følelser som potensielt oppstår i slike situasjoner kan føre til emosjonelle reaksjoner som gir utslag i irrasjonelle beslutninger og kroppslige reaksjoner. De kan også bidra med en forståelse for at det å utføre omsorgshandlingene kan være utfordrende om man ikke opplever at de fører til et verdifullt resultat, og at det å søke hjelp med omsorgsarbeidet også kan være en omsorgshandling.

Olaug Nilssen’s novels Tung tids tale (2017) and Yt etter evne, få etter behov (2020) deal with being a mother and a relative to a child with autism and intellectual disability. In these novels, we gain insights into the mothers’ thoughts and feelings related to their sons’ diagnoses, and we also get an insight into what everyday life can look like when you are the mother of a child with these diagnoses. Therefore, it is in this bachelor’s thesis taken a closer look at how Nilssen’s presentation of the role of a mother to a child with the mentioned diagnoses can contribute with insight into what it is like to be the mother and a relative to a child with autism and intellectual disability. This is done by examining the author’s use of narrative techniques related to the narrator, the focalization and the passage of time in the novels and linking this to knowledge about emotions and expectation theory related to acts of care. As a result of this, the novels can be said to provide insight into how feelings that potentially arise in such situations can lead to emotional reactions that results in irrational decisions and bodily reactions. They can also provide an understanding of the challenges of performing caregiving actions when one does not experience that they lead to valuable result, and that seeking help with caregiving can also be an act of caring.
