How can AI be used as a tool in the process of personalized learning?

Abstract

Denne bachelor oppgaven har som mål å utforske problemområdet tilpasset opplæring med fokus på det norske skolesystemet. Norske lærere sliter for tiden med tidsbegrensninger forårsaket av et lavt antall lærerstudenter og en økning i arbeidsmengde, som et resultat blir den lovpålagte tilpassede opplæringen negativt påvirket. Med fremveksten av AI-teknologi fremkommer det en mulighet til å undersøke om, hvordan og til hvilken grad AI-basert teksttilpasning kan bistå dette problemet. To konferansebidrag danner grunnlaget for utforskningen om AI kan bistå dette problemet. Den første undersøkte nåværende praksis og meninger om AI, mens den andre testet effektiviteten av AI-tilpassede tekster. Gjennom utviklingen av nettsiden ble denne kunnskapen brukt til å utforske hvordan man kan bygge et AI-basert læringsverktøy. Resultatene indikerte at det er behov for å effektivisere prosessen med tilpasset opplæring, lærere er villige til å bruke AI, og teknologien er tilstrekkelig til å oppnå dette. I tillegg til dette har utforming av prompt stor påvirkning på kvaliteten til resultatene og kan avgjøre effektiviteten til teksten.

This thesis aims to explore the problem area surrounding the process of personalized learning with a focus on the Norwegian school system. Norwegian teachers are currently struggling with time constraints caused by a low amount of teacher applicants and an increase in workload, as a result, the legally mandated personalized learning is being obstructed. With the advent of widespread AI technology an opportunity presents itself to investigate if, how, and to what degree AI based text adaptation could offer a solution. Two conference papers form the basis of the exploration into whether AI could mitigate this problem. One investigated current practices and opinions on AI, while the second tested the effectiveness of AI adapted texts. Through the development of the website, this knowledge was utilized to explore how to build an AI-based learning tool. The results indicated that there is a need to streamline the process of personalized learning, teachers are willing to use AI, and the technology is sufficient. In addition to this, prompt design has a big impact on the quality of the output and can make or break its effectiveness.
