Keeping it Real: Analyzing intersectional narratives of gender and sexuality in popular Hip Hop today through Megan Thee Stallion and Lil Nas X

Abstract

Denne oppgaven analyserer viktigheten av varierte narrativ om seksualitet og kjønn gjennom interseksjonelle rappere i populær Hip Hop. Den undersøker hvordan dette fremstilles av Megan Thee Stallion og Lil Nas X i dag. Dette gjøres gjennom å se på tidligere representasjon av interseksjonalitet i rap, samt viktige teorier fra Crenshaw (1991), Collins (2000), Pough (2004), Oware (2011), Penney (2012) og Roach (2019). Hvordan Megan Thee Stallion og Lil Nas X lager nye narrativ om seksualitet og kjønn i populær hiphop gjennom tekstene deres, blir undersøkt med vekt på deres utelatlese av "Black respectable currenct" og "Black hypermasculinity" i konstruksjonen av deres egen selvdefinisjon.

This thesis analyzes the importance of varied narratives of sexuality and gender through intersectional rappers in popular Hip Hop. It examines how this is portrayed by Megan Thee Stallion and Lil Nas X today. This is done through looking at previous representation of intersectionality in rap, as well as important theories from Crenshaw (1991), Collins (2000), Pough (2004), Oware (2011), Penney (2012) and Roach (2019). How Megan Thee Stallion and Lil Nas X provide new narratives of sexuality and gender in popular Hip Hop through their lyrics is examined with emphasis on their disregard of Black respectable currency and Black hypermasculinity in the construction of their self-definition.
