Abstract
Norwegian employee participation has a long history, contributing to rich cooperation between companies, employees, and even the state. This is an important contributor to organizational questions such as organizational change, salary regulations, and workplace conditions. In this case study, a qualitative approach has been used to investigate the research question "How does motivation affect the daily work during an initiative to increase participation in an interdisciplinary workplace?". For the data collection, 2 different methods were used. Semi-structured interviews, with a total of 6 participants, and 2 focus groups, with 6 participants divided into the 2 groups. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyze the results. The 3 emerging themes are Good Groundwork Simplifies Later Work, People Must Feel Heard, and Under the Surface. The results indicate that the motivation to increase participation in the workplace is affecting the workers on three levels; practical, by seeing results; interactively within communication; and under the surface, by emotions and the drive emanating from the leaders involved. The results were discussed considering McGregor's Theory X and Y and Cynicism of Change and implications for further research in three different directions are presented.
