This thesis analyzes the ongoing volcanic eruption near Grindavík, Iceland. The analysis examines the consequences on infrastructure and life resulting from the volcanic eruption, as well as preparedness and response strategies. Through remote sensing and GIS analysis, the lava flows have been mapped, and the impact on local infrastructure and buildings has been quantified. The results show that the eruption has caused extensive damage to roads and other infrastructure in the surrounding area. Several kilometers of roads have been destroyed by the lava flows, which has posed challenges for the local population and led to the closure of important roads leading into the town and to the Blue Lagoon. Iceland is known for its many geothermal pools, including the Blue Lagoon, which is also one of the most visited tourist attractions in Iceland. The analysis highlights the importance of good preparedness and effective crisis management in the face of natural disasters. The response strategies of the Icelandic authorities, including evacuation, construction of lava barriers, and continuous monitoring, have been crucial in limiting the extent of the damage. The thesis underscores that volcanic eruptions can have significant consequences for local communities and infrastructure, especially in areas with high volcanic activity, such as Iceland. The experiences from the Grindavík eruption can contribute to improving preparedness and response strategies for future volcanic events, both nationally and internationally.
