Objective: To investigate the characteristics of interaction/cooperation betweenaudiologists and “hearing-contacts” in rehabilitation of the hearing impaired, byhighlighting the experiences and thoughts within the hearing field.
Method: A qualitative, phenomenological focus group interview was conducted.Audiologists and “hearing-contacts” were recruited through digital correspondence. The interview was conducted on the digital platform Microsoft Teams. The datamaterial was transcribed and analyzed using systematic text condensation.
Study sample: Five participants (3 “hearing-contacts” and 2 audiologists) wererecruited. The “hearing-contacts” had professional backgrounds in ergotherapy andnursing. The audiologists were employed at public hospitals.
Results: The participants shared their experiences of, and thoughts around, sufficient and/or insufficient cooperation, as well as theoretically sufficientcooperation. Great differences were found in how the role of “hearing-contact” wasorganized and prioritized between municipalities, leading to variable and obstructedcooperation in many cases. Existing digital solutions for informational flow andcommunication were described as not being facilitated towards interaction betweenthe parties. The participants discussed a need for increased knowledge and visibilityof hearing related issues, and the related health services that provide care, as ameans to strengthen prioritization, and through this, cooperation. The participantsdescribed sufficient cooperation as highly valuable for the work they do towardshearing-related rehabilitation, and as such, also for the services they can provide theaffected patients and their relatives.
Conclusion: The study found that the interaction is characterized by variations inexecution and success, as a result of differences in organization and audiologicalcompetence, among other things. Sufficient cooperation between audiologists and“hearing-contacts” is considered to be of great value towards strengthening therehabilitation they can provide to the hearing impaired and their relatives.
