T.E. Lawrence’s contradictory creation of legacy and identity in Seven Pillars of Wisdom

Abstract

Selv om Seven Pillars of Wisdom har mistet kredibilitet som en historisk beretning om Araberoppstanden etter mange tiår med gransking og omtolkning er den fortsatt den mest verdifulle informasjonskilden om T.E. Lawrence selv. Ved å analyse Lawrences forhold til litterært forfatterskap og sjangerkonvensjonene som formet boka hans avslører sidestillingen de spesifikke måtene han brukte sitt forfatterskap til å skape sitt eget ettermæle. Lawrence sitt vekslende forhold til sin egen skriving illustrerer hvordan denne prosessen var tidvis motstridende, og i selvmotsigelsene ser vi de konkurrerende impulsene som var i sving da han forfattet Seven Pillars of Wisdom og sin egen identitet.

While Seven Pillars of Wisdom has lost credibility as a purely historical account of the Arab Revolt after many decades of scrutinization and reinterpretation, it remains the most valuable source of information about T.E. Lawrence himself. By analysing Lawrence’s relationship to literary authorship and the generic conventions that shaped his book the juxtaposition reveals the specific ways in which he used his authorship to create a legacy for himself. Lawrence’s inconsistent attitude towards his own work illustrates how this process was at times contradictory, and in their contradictions we can see the competing impulses that were at work as he authored Seven Pillars of Wisdom and his own identity.
