Conversion tool for the Innlandet County Archive

Abstract

Arkivering av digital data har blitt en aktuell problemstilling i den moderne verden, spesielt mtp. filformater. Innlandet Fylkesarkiv kom med et ønske om en fil-konverterings applikasjon hvor man kunne integrere ulike eksterne konverteringsverktøy og automatisk dokumentere konverteringer. Løsningen er en modulær .NET applikasjon som bla. sender filer til riktig konverteringsverktøy, leser konverterings-innstillinger fra brukeren vha. et brukergrensesnitt eller en XML-fil og lager dokumentasjon for alle filer sendt gjennom programmet. Løsningen kan også sende filer gjennom flere konverteringsprosesser hvor funksjonalitet fra ulike konverteringsverktøy blir kombinert for å nå riktig filformat. Dette prosjektet har også hatt et stort fokus på "open-source" med et håp om at andre arkiv og bibliotek kan ta i bruk applikasjonen.

The emergence of digital archiving within the modern world provides interesting challenges, especially concerning file formats. The Innlandet County Archive came up with the need for a file conversion application that integrates various external conversion tools and automatically documents conversions. The solution is a modular .NET application that sends files to the correct conversion tool, reads settings from the user through a user interface or an XML file, and creates documentation for all files sent through the program. The solution can also send files through several conversion processes where functionality from several conversion tools are combined to reach the correct file format. Furthermore, the project has had a major focus on open-source with the hope that other archives and libraries can adopt the application.
