In 2016, the British people voted to leave the European Union, becoming the firstcountry ever to do so. The result of the process that has been called Brexit has since thereferendum had negative consequences for the British economy, and the question thenbecomes why Brexit happened. In this thesis, the purpose is to find out why Brexithappened by analyzing the arguments of the side that won, the Leave campaign, to findtheir most important arguments during the debate. The analysis is of 4 central Britishnewspapers. The method that has been adopted has been a quantitative content analysisto count the number of times words and phrases were used in articles, and a discourseanalysis to investigate more deeply the meaning of the language in the articles. Previousresearch literature has often put economics secondary in the explanation for why Brexithappened. Still, in this thesis, the results of the content analysis show that economicswas the most discussed topic, followed by immigration and sovereignty. The result of thediscourse analysis showed that the most discussed aspect of the debate, economics, wascharacterized by arguments from both sides, but that the Leave campaign met theRemain campaign`s arguments by labeling them as scare tactics and managed to turnthe narrative into that Brexit would strengthen the British economy. The thesis concludesthat the economy was the most important argument for the Leave campaign during theBrexit debate in 2016 and that the Leave campaign managed to turn economic warningsfrom the Remain side, using Project Fear, into a reality where Brexit would improve theeconomy through increased trade potential and more economic freedom.
