dc.description.abstract | Labour marked policy in Norway is strongly impacted by workfare. NAV works with a clear
goal of getting young jobseekers into working life. Surveys show that several in the target
group of workfares are coping with challenges related to mental health. The purpose of the
thesis is therefore to shed light on the issue: How are young jobseekers with mental health
challenges coping with workfare? A subproblem is what relational steps social workers can
take to accommodate them. The aim of the bachelor’s thesis is to systematically collect data
through databases. Other relevant theory and literature are also used to inform the issue.
The assignment is based on theory and literature on mental health challenges, social capital,
community, and recognition. Several in the target group may face barriers to participation
caused by lack of qualification and formal competence. In addition, some may find mental
health challenges causing emotional and physical stress and to limit participation. This may
cause marginalized positioning as unemployed. It may lead to burdening experiences
negatively affecting coping, self-confidence and -image. In the end, I have discussed how
mobilization and participation can depend on motivation, community, and the opportunity to
achieve social support, respect, and recognition.
