Karakterer som driver narrativ
Abstract
This bachelor thesis aims to explore how characters are used to drive the narrative in a film. Through a close study of the protagonist, Phil Burbank, in the film The Power of The Dog (Campion 2021), I explain how the character's inner psyche, choices and relationships with the other characters affect the story in the film. I base the method on existing character theory, mostly from Audun Engelstad, Ian Cameron and Douglas Pye's book The movie Book of the Western and Jim Kitses and Gregg Rickman's book The Western Reader. In addition, I will apply genre theory to establish the film itself, using Kitses and Rickman's book in collaboration with Peter C. Rollins and John E. O'Connor's Hollywood's West. The analysis gives reason to claim that the character's psyche and inner insecurity lead to him making choices that lead the narrative forward in small and large ways.
