This master thesis examines the extent to which Hermann Hesse’s novel Der Steppenwolf (1927) can be read as an example of a literary representation of Nietzsches philosophical concept of “amor fati”. Amor fati is in this text defined as a notion, that must be understood in connection to a number of other ideas from Nietzsche’s philosophy. Based on readings of Also sprach Zarathustra (1883 – 85), Die fröhliche Wissenschaft (1882) and Ecce Homo (1908), the text presents a thesis on which ideas amor fati can be understood in relation to; the notion of “the eternal return”, “of the three metamorphoses”, “the reappraisal of happiness and suffering”, “Dionysian wisdom” and the imperative “become who you are!”. The relevant definition of amor fati is then applied in the analysis of the novel’s protagonist, Harry Haller, and his transformation from being suicidal to becoming an artist of life. The analysis examines to which extent his transformative experiences and teachings can be connected to Nietzsche’s amor fati.
