Abstract
Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge of Courage" redefines the war narrative through its exploration of a soldier’s psychological struggle during the American Civil War. This thesis examines the protagonist, Henry Fleming, as he confronts fear, cowardice, and valor. Crane’s narrative departs from traditional heroic tales by focusing on the internal battles of soldiers, using symbolism and naturalistic detail to enhance the story’s emotional impact. Through Henry's experiences, the novel investigates the theme of courage in the face of overwhelming adversity. This study reveals Crane's novel as a timeless commentary on the complexities of war and the human condition, emphasizing psychological conflict over battlefield glory.
