Summary The present study focuses on the clitic pronoun y and its acquisition in L2 French by Norwegian students. The aim of this study is to investigate the degree of mastery of the placement of the pronoun y in a simple sentence with different verb forms as well as the students' ability to recognize various functions such as COD and COI. We will present the empirical data obtained using the test. 19 Norwegian university students from Oslo, Trondheim and Caen at the beginner level in French participated in this study. Although the research literature on the acquisition of clitic complements is quite voluminous, only a few studies, such as Wust (2006, 2009) and Driessen (2012), have focused on the acquisition of the pronoun y due to its complexity. In reality, the smallest of all pronouns, y can act as actant, circumstant, and it can also participate in numerous fixed constructions where its syntactic function is often uncertain. This is why the theoretical part of our study is devoted to the consideration of the unique properties of the pronoun y and its place in the French pronominal system, as well as to a comparison of the Norwegian and French pronominal systems. The results of this study reveal that the acquisition of this pronoun poses a certain challenge for Norwegian students, particularly in sentences with compound verb forms such as the past tense and the periphrastic form, as well as in the use of the animacy in French. Key words: clitic pronoun y, acquisition of the clitic pronoun y in L2 French, placement of y.
