The design of road cuts along public roads is obligated to adhere to the requirements in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration's (NPRA) handbook N200 Road construction. Handbook N200 is authorized by the Norwegian Road Act, and incorporates elements of the European standard Eurocode. Geotechnical classification of road cuts is based on their complexity and associated risks, categorizing them as geotechnical category 1, 2, or 3. Road cuts exceeding a height of 10 meters are mandated to be classified under geotechnical category 3. Each category entails distinct requirements concerning planning, execution, rock reinforcement, documentation, and control.
A road cut is a construction, and when establishing road cuts basic regulations for constructions must therefore be followed. This master's thesis systematically examines the regulations applicable to road cuts work, encompassing the Planning and Building Act (PBL), the Road Act, Eurocode 0, 7, and 8, as well as handbook N200. The design of road cuts necessitates engineering geological assessments and site-specific adaptations. Consequently, specific design requirements remain relatively sparse. Prescribed criteria for slope height, inclination, or the need for benches are not explicitly provided. However, the NPRA's guide N-V225 Road cuts offers various recommendations pertaining to road cut design. Freedom of design can optimize projects with road cuts due to the possibility of adaptation to local geological conditions.
Stability analyses of road cuts employ the partial factor method and <<design method 3>>. The analyzes and mapping of road cuts can also be carried out through digital tools, such as 3D models generated from photogrammetry. Visualization of rock mass structures in 3D models is useful when working with with road cuts. On that occasion, the masters thesis is connected to a case from an ongoing construction project along the E6 Kvithammar-Åsen in Trøndelag. The case study explores digital visualization techniques for rock mass structures, including a potentially unstable wedge. Furthermore, examples demonstrating the visualization of the road cut's structural composition and any associated challenges are presented through the utilization of a 3D model. Based on the appraisal of existing regulations and the visualization of road cuts in a 3D model, this master's thesis concludes that the inclusion of digital tools should be considered as part of the NPRA's recommendations for documentation and control of complex road cuts, potentially in the form of a requirement.
