tene i næringen.
I fremti-
I dag
fiskeforet (Skretting 2021) (Naylor mfl. 2009).
For kart-
dc.description.abstract | The goal of the master’s thesis is to examine how the capture and onboard processing
of Calanus finmarchicus are carried out in Norway today, along with the challenges
and opportunities in the industry. The master’s thesis is part of the Calafeed project,
which aims to utilize Calanus finmarchicus as a feed ingredient for salmon in the
aquaculture industry. Calanus finmarchicus is a planktonic organism that lives in
the Norwegian Sea. It is a central part of the ecosystem and plays an important role
in the food chain of pelagic fish such as herring and mackerel. Additionally, Calanus
finmarchicus is a crucial food source for fish larvae (Thorsen Broms 2019). There
are several reasons why analyzing Calanus finmarchicus asa fish feed ingredient is
important. Calanus finmarchicus contains essential nutrients that fish need, which
are currently utilized by pelagic fish. In the future, these nutrients could be utilized
in salmon aquaculture as part of their diet. Currently, there is an increasing use of
soy and other vegetable ingredients, but these can lead to health challenges, reduced growth, and lower utilization in salmon (Gatlin mfl. 2007). Calanus finmarchicus
has the potential to be a sustainable ingredient since it is found in the Norwegian
Sea, and the feed for salmon in the aquaculture industry consists of 50-60% marine
proteins that cannot be replaced by vegetable sources (Skretting 2021) (Naylor mfl.
2009). Therefore, Calanus finmarchicus can be a local ingredient that can substitute
for other marine ingredients in fish feed. The presence of Calanus finmarchicus in the
Norwegian Sea could also potentially reduce production costs for fish feed. To gather
more information, a literature search was conducted, but it provided limited information. As a result, interviews were conducted with fishing companies and researchers
associated with the industry. The interviewees provided information on the seasons,
operations, onboard processes, and other relevant details. An open semi-structured
interview was conducted using an interview guide, but the interview also allowed
the interviewees to provide additional relevant information. The interviewees agreed
that this is an industry with great potential but requires development in three main
areas. These areas include mapping the distribution and locating Calanus finmarchicus, developing new harvesting methods to improve efficiency, and implementing
new onboard processing techniques to increase storage capacity. Ideas such as using
sail drones and satellite imagery were suggested for mapping, while more passive
solutions or bubble trawls were proposed for harvesting. Regarding onboard processing, separating Calanus finmarchicus into two fractions, one rich in fat and the
other rich in protein, was discussed. All interviewees agreed that the industry needs
more resources, development, and funding to find new solutions for harvesting and
onboard processing, but they acknowledged the potential for Calanus finmarchicus
to become a feed ingredient.
