justert OR på 3,68 (KI 2,91-4,66).
folkehelsekampanje for psykisk helse i Norge.
dc.description.abstract | Background: Mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression, contribute to significant
health loss in Norway. At the same time, surveys have shown that the population’s
health literacy in mental health is low. Low health literacy can in itself be associated with
poorer health and quality of life. The purpose of this study was to get updated numbers
on key aspects of health literacy in a Norwegian population, and to investigate whether
health literacy has an impact on subjective health and quality of life.
Method: We conducted an electronic survey in Trøndelag in the population aged
between 16-79. The number of participants was 1513. Cross-tabulations were used for
descriptive analyses, and logistic regression analysis was used to examine the
connections between the various aspects of health literacy and the participants’
subjective health and quality of life.
Result: The results showed that there was a significantly larger proportion of the
population who found it difficult to find and understand information about mental health,
compared to physical health, and that there was a clear association between
experiencing different aspects of health literacy as difficult, and having poor subjective
health and quality of life. In particular, to experience that it is difficult to make decisions
to improve health and well-being was connected with a low degree of positive mental
health, with an adjusted OR of 4,29 (CI 3,06-6,03), and poor health, at an adjusted OR
of 3,68 (CI 2,91-4,66).
Conclusion: This study showed that there are good arguments for implementing a public
health campaign for mental health in Norway. The message must be simple and easily
understandable in all parts of society. Furthermore, working to increase health literacy in
the population may in itself improve health and quality of life.
