dc.description.abstract | In the rapidly evolving landscape of private space exploration, the task of safely landing spacecraft using parafoils has garnered significant interest. This thesis, set within the
context of space landings and inspired by the work of SENER Aerospacial, examines the
implementation of an online optimization-based guidance strategy for landing utilizing a
parafoil.
Leveraging the capabilities of the open-source optimization tool, CasADi, a 3-degreesof-freedom (dof) Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) guidance system is implemented. This system provides a reference trajectory for a tracking controller to follow. The
research also introduces a U-pattern terminal landing strategy, demonstrating adaptability
in addressing different initial positions, headings, and wind estimations. In addition, an
algorithm to initiate the NMPC guidance has been developed.
The experimental results obtained highlight the significant impact of wind estimation
on landing accuracy. Although this study provides insights into the implementation of a
3-dof NMPC guidance system for parafoil landings, it has predominantly been conducted
without integrating a detailed navigation system or considering height-dependent wind
variations.
Future work should focus on incorporating these aspects, specifically addressing the
integration of a comprehensive navigation system and possible accounting for heightdependent wind estimations. Extending the study by using a high-fidelity parafoil system
model is also recommended.
