Digitisering og verdivurdering av fotoarkiv i en ny tid. Et casestudie av Preus museum, Maihaugen og Norsk vegmuseum.

Abstract

Problemstillingen i denne oppgaven er: Hvordan har digitiseringen og bevaringen av fotoarkiv utviklet seg de siste førti årene? For å svare på dette, utforsker oppgaven arbeidet som er blitt gjort innen digitisering, samt relaterte temaer som bevaring, verdivurdering og teknologisk utvikling. Disse tre temaene beskrives og relateres til digitisering, fordi de er aktuelle i arbeidet med digitisering av fotografi. Oppgaven undersøker dermed politiske føringer for museenes samlingsforvaltning, samt utviklingen av standarder for digitisering av foto og teknologiske verktøy i både arkiv- og museumssektoren.

For å aktualisere denne tematikken, er det gjennomført et casestudie ved tre ulike museer. De valgte museene er Preus museum i Horten, som har status som nasjonalt fotomuseum; Maihaugen i Lillehammer, som er Norges største friluftsmuseum og forvalter både bygninger, gjenstander og fotoarkiver; samt Norsk vegmuseum på Fåberg ved Lillehammer, som er etatsmuseum for Statens veivesen og forvalter bygninger, bruer, kjøretøyer, tunellgravingsmaskiner, så vel som fotoarkiver. Oppgaven ser dermed nærmere på innsamlingsplanene til disse institusjonene og intervjuer ansatte som arbeider med fotosamlinger ved disse tre museene. Dette vil gi innsikt i bevaringsprosesser, inntaksprosesser og teknologiutvikling knyttet til fotoforvaltningen hos disse institusjonene. Hovedfunnet i oppgaven er at vi har hatt en voldsom fremgang innen digitiseringen, der man for hvert år har hatt en utvikling innenfor teknologien med tanke på fotografisk-, data- og lagringsteknologi.

This thesis examines the question: How has the digitization and preservation of photo archives developed in the last forty years? To answer this, the thesis explores the work that has been done in digitalisation, as well as related topics such as conservation, valuation and technological development. These three themes are described and related to digitization, because they are relevant in the work with digitization of photography. The assignment thus examines political guidelines for the museums' collection management, as well as the development of standards for the digitization of photographs and technological tools in both the archive and museum sectors.

In order to bring this theme up to date, a case study has been carried out at three different museums. The selected museums are the Preus museum in Horten, which has status as a national photography museum; Maihaugen in Lillehammer, which is Norway's largest open-air museum and manages both buildings, objects and photo archives; as well as the Norsk vegmuseum at Fåberg near Lillehammer, which is the agency museum for Statens Vegvesen and manages buildings, bridges, vehicles, tunnel digging machines, as well as photo archives. The assignment thus takes a closer look at the collection plans of these institutions and interviews employees who work with photo collections at these three museums. This will provide insight into conservation processes, intake processes and technology development related to photo management at these institutions. The main finding in the thesis is that we have made tremendous progress in digitization, where each year there has been a development within the technology with regard to photographic, computer and storage technology.
