Urbant broderi: en reise i det forlatte

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven tar utgangspunkt i urban utforskning av forlatte steder, og hvordan kombinasjonen av broderi og fotografi kan påvirke uttrykket i dokumentasjonen av dem. Jeg undersøker den tredimensjonale effekten til ulike broderingsteknikker, og ser nærmere på hvilken måte det påvirker uttrykket i bildet. Hensikten med studien er å undersøke hvordan man kan kombinere flere ulike teknikker og aktiviteter, hva som skjer med fotografiet når det endres, og avdekke det didaktiske potensialet i det. Problemstillingen ble formulert med et fokus på at det er gjennom min egen skapende prosess den skal besvares, og den lyder:

«Hvordan kan kombinasjonen av broderi og fotografi i min skapende prosess påvirke utrykket i urban utforskning av forlatte steder?»

Studien tar utgangspunkt i det performative forskningsparadigmet, med arts-based research som metodologi. Det er gjennom kunsten jeg søker å forstå verden og finne svar på problemstillingen min. Jeg har deltatt i en urban utforskning av forlatte bygg, fotografert de, for så og prøvd ut ulike teknikker i verksted. Funnene fra utprøvingen resulterte i et større verk som blir presentert på en egen utstilling ved universitetet. Hele den skapende prosessen er dokumentert på TikTok brukeren ronjace_m.

Analysearbeidet har bestått av en narrativt dreven analyse, og selvkomponerte skjema og matriser. Prosjektet bidrar med å vise hvordan relieff og tekstur påvirker kunsten vi møter, og hvordan det på ulike måter kan endre uttrykket i verket. Det viser hvordan man ved å kombinere ulike teknikker og aktiviteter oppnår intra-askjon og en ny forståelse. Det didaktiske potensialet ble drøftet opp mot urban utforskning, og kombinasjonen av fotografi og brodering i skolen. Jeg har tro på at resultatet av denne undersøkelsen kan bli brukt som en veiledning for undervisning i grunnskolen, og at den kan tilby nye innfallsvinkler til godt kjente teknikker.

This master's thesis is based on urban exploration of abandoned places, and how the combination of embroidery and photography can influence the expression in their documentation. I investigate the three-dimensional effect of various embroidery techniques, and look in more detail at how it affects the expression in the image. The purpose of the study is to investigate how to combine several different techniques and activities, what happens to the photograph when it changes, and uncover the didactic potential in it. The reacearch question was formulated with a focus on the fact that it is to be answered through my own creative process, and it reads:

"How can the combination of embroidery and photography in my creative process influence the expression in urban exploration of abandoned places?"

The study is based on the performative research paradigm, with arts-based research as methodology. It is through art that I seek to understand the world and find answers to my problems. I have participated in an urban exploration of abandoned buildings, photographed them, and then tried out different techniques in the workshop. The findings from the trial resulted in a larger work which is presented at a separate exhibition at the university. The entire creative process is documented on TikTok user ronjace_m.

The analysis work has consisted of a narrative-driven analysis, and self-composed forms and matrices. The project helps to show how relief and texture affect the art we encounter, and how it can change the expression in the work in various ways. It shows how, by combining different techniques and activities, one achieves intra-action and a new understanding. The didactic potential was discussed against urban exploration, and the combination of photography and embroidery in school. I believe that the results of this investigation can be used as a guide for teaching in primary schools, and that it can offer new approaches to well-known techniques.
