The purpose of this thesis is to study the experiences and thoughts on “Folkehelse og livsmestring” (FoL), that can be translated to “Health and life skills” in English. This is a new multi- and interdisciplinary theme, which came with the knowledge pledge of 2020. There is an increasing focus on public health, this can also be seen in the school system. Mental illnesses and disorders are among societies biggest challenges, furthermore there is a significant amount of research that demonstrates that teenagers are experiencing this at a higher rate. Taking this into consideration, I decided to explore the following research question:
What are the experiences of students and teachers with “Folkehelse og livsmestring” (Health and life skills) in the school? And what impact do they think this will have on the student’s mental health?
The data collection for this qualitative study is based on semi-structured interviews, both individual and group interviews. The participants consist of seven high school students, two teachers and one school nurse, divided between two different schools in the country. This means that I will be examining two different “worlds”, one from the perspective of the students and one from the perspective of the teachers. The material has been analysed with an abductive approach, elements from a thematic analysis, based on theory, current research and empirical evidence from this study. The analysis shows signs of a phenomenological scientific approach where the participants' own experiences and descriptions are emphasised. In addition to this, I have used hermeneutics for my own interpretations. As a result of the analysis four main categories were established, which my discussion part is structured in accordance to and are the following: conceptual understanding, attitudes around the subject, the teacher's role and competence and the opportunities and challenges that come with FoL.
Key findings from this empirical study demonstrates a varying degree of knowledge on the theme of FoL and mental health, both amongst students and teachers. The teacher’s role and knowledge with regard to this theme will be discussed. Another finding is that there is an apparent gap between the student’s and the teacher’s experiences around how well the theme is implemented. The student’s experience the teachings on FoL as lacking, while the teachers are of the opinion that the theme is continually under development. It can also seem that FoL is not being practiced according to the intentions of the curriculum, furthermore it seems that the organisation of the subject varies from school to school. Amongst other things, FoL is criticised for not having clear competency goals.
My study suggests that there is a need for more cooperation on FoL, so as to gain an understanding on this complex theme. Additionally, this study demonstrates that there are important reasons as to why mental health should be included at a larger scale within the multidisciplinary subject and that on a general basis it should be a part of a field of knowledge in school. In the concluding comments, amongst my recommendations is that there should be a systematic approach to FoL by way of more courses and training for teachers. To conclude it will highlight the studies relevance for further research.
