"War was a hellish, horrible, hideous thing": A study of nostalgia, heroism, and attitudes towards war in Rilla of Ingleside

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven tar for seg hvordan nostalgi, heroisme og holdninger til krig blir fremstilt i Lucy Maud Montgomery sin Rilla of Ingleside. Oppgaven søker å belyse hvordan nostalgiske assosiasjoner til hjemmet kan forandre seg som følge av krigsutbrudd, hvordan nostalgi kan inspirere til patriotisme, samt hvordan den stereotypiske fremstillingen av kjønn og heroisme er påvirket av krig. Den teoretiske fremgangsmåten baserer seg på Johannes Hofers, Sigmund Freuds og Svetlana Boyms påstander om nostalgibegrepet, i tillegg til Joseph Campbells og Scott T. Allisons og Jeffrey D. Greens oppfatninger av heroisme og heroisk adferd.

This bachelor thesis deals with how nostalgia, heroism, and attitudes towards war is portrayed in Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Rilla of Ingleside. The assignment seeks to enlighten how nostalgic associations linked to the home can change due to an outbreak of war, how nostalgia can inspire patriotism, and how the stereotypical portrayal of gender and heroism is affected by the outbreak of war. The theoretic approach is based on Johannes Hofer’s, Sigmund Freud’s, and Svetlana Boym’s assertations on the nostalgia term along with Joseph Campbells and Scott T. Allison & Jeffrey D. Green’s perceptions of heroism and heroic behavior.
