Method: We have done a systematic literature search to find material that will answer ourresearch question. We have used the databases; Cinahl Complete, PubMed, Idunn andMedline. The literature study includes 6 qualitative and 2 quantitative studies. To analyze ourarticles we have used Evans analysis model.
Results: Based on the analysis, we found 4 themes that recurred in all the articles. Thethemes we found were; 1) the importance of early involvement, 2) lack of interdisciplinarycollaboration, 3) insufficient competence and 4) little access to resources.
Conclusion: Nurses experience challenges such as poor communication within theinterdisciplinary team as well as with agencies across the health sector. This leads to limitedtransfer of knowledge to the professions and little continuity for the patient. Time pressureand low staffing affects the quality of palliative care for cancer patients living at home.Palliative care requires good competence, which is given as a lower priority due to lack oftime and little experience in the area. When homecare nurses are involved late in theprocess, it is experienced as challenging for the nurses as they are often faced with a crisissituation and a good relationship has not been established with the patient and their next ofkin.
