Short description of the bachelor thesis:
Background: Sepsis is the leading cause of death caused by infection and occurs in 1% of allpatients admitted to Norwegian hospitals. Despite national guidelines for the identification andtreatment of sepsis, and various aids for identification, sepsis is one of the most commoncauses of death in Norwegian hospitals.
Purpose: To research what factors play a role in the identification of sepsis in the hospitalward, and what can make this difficult in the elderly patient.
Methods: The assignment is a literature study where ten research articles with qualitative andquantitative data were included. Structured searches were carried out in the database PubMedand Cinahl. Results from the research articles were critically analyzed and discussed againsteach other and other relevant literature.
Result: Three main themes were categorized based on the results from the research articles:1) The elderly patient, 2) Screening tools and 3) Nurse’s role.
Conclusion: The reason why sepsis can be difficult to identify in elderly patients in hospitalward is complex. The nurse must have good expertise in both sepsis and the elderly patient.Elderly patients often have subtle and deviant signs of illness, which can make the use ofscreening tools challenging. This requires that training is provided from the workplace, andthat each individual nurse stays professionally up-to-date. Competences in observationcommunication, documentation and the use of screening tools play an important role. Inaddition, studies show that lack of resources and stereotypical attitudes about the elderlypatient can delay the identification of sepsis.
