I tillegg
dc.description.abstract | Short description of the bachelor thesis:
Background: Sepsis is the leading cause of death caused by infection and occurs in 1% of all
patients admitted to Norwegian hospitals. Despite national guidelines for the identification and
treatment of sepsis, and various aids for identification, sepsis is one of the most common
causes of death in Norwegian hospitals.
Purpose: To research what factors play a role in the identification of sepsis in the hospital
ward, and what can make this difficult in the elderly patient.
Methods: The assignment is a literature study where ten research articles with qualitative and
quantitative data were included. Structured searches were carried out in the database PubMed
and Cinahl. Results from the research articles were critically analyzed and discussed against
each other and other relevant literature.
Result: Three main themes were categorized based on the results from the research articles:
1) The elderly patient, 2) Screening tools and 3) Nurse’s role.
Conclusion: The reason why sepsis can be difficult to identify in elderly patients in hospital
ward is complex. The nurse must have good expertise in both sepsis and the elderly patient.
Elderly patients often have subtle and deviant signs of illness, which can make the use of
screening tools challenging. This requires that training is provided from the workplace, and
that each individual nurse stays professionally up-to-date. Competences in observation
communication, documentation and the use of screening tools play an important role. In
addition, studies show that lack of resources and stereotypical attitudes about the elderly
patient can delay the identification of sepsis.
