Karakterutviklingen til protagonisten Mary i Octavia E. Butler sin roman Mind of My Mind (1977) kan analyseres og forstås ut ifra Sigmund Freud sin psykoanalytiske teori om hjernens oppbygning, bestående av de tre komponentene id, ego og superego. Gjennom Mary sin karakterutvikling blir hun påvirket av de tre komponentene, hvor hun som latent i stor grad påvirkes av id sin impulsive tankegang, mens hun som aktiv blir påvirket av ego sin rasjonalitet og superego sin moralitet. De tre komponentene arbeider både individuelt og samlet for å forme Mary sin atferd.

The character development of the protagonist Mary in Octavia E. Butler's novel Mind of My Mind (1977) can be analysed and understood on the basis of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of the structure of the mind, consisting of the three components id, ego and superego. Throughout Mary's character development, she is influenced by the three components. As a latent, Mary is heavily influenced by the id's impulsive thinking, and as an active she is influenced by the ego's rationality and the superego's morality. The three components work both individually and collectively to shape Mary's behaviour.
