Skammens sosiale maske: Om pårørenderollens skam og påvirkning på identitetsutvikling i ungdomsromanene Å fange luft (2021) og Høgspenning livsfare (2020)

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven undersøker hvilke innsikter ungdomsromanene å fange luft (2021) av Neda Alaei og Høgspenning livsfare (2020) av Helene Guåker kan gi oss om temaene identitet og skam, knyttet opp mot unge pårørende av foreldre med psykisk uhelse. Oppgaven består av en komparativ analyse av de to romanene, hvor jeg gjennom nærlesing av begge romanene har forsket på horisontale litterære forbindelser gjennom formmessige og tematiske grep. Som teoretisk bakteppe for oppgaven, har teorien om individets daglige rollespill av Erving Goffman, samt Stephen P. Hinshaws forskning på skam og stigmatisering forbundet til psykisk uhelse vært sentrale. Teoriene har blitt trukket frem gjennom oppgavens diskusjon, hvor det diskuteres rundt hvilke innsikter romanene kan gi oss. Her belyses det blant annet at ungdommene opplever ensomhet, skam og frykt for situasjonen de befinner seg i, og også hvorfor dette er relevant til virkeligheten.

This bachelor thesis examines what insights the young adult novels å fange luft (2021) by Neda Alaei and Høgspenning livsfare (2020) by Helene Guåker can give us about the themes of identity and shame, related to children of parents with mental illness. The dissertation consists of a comparative analysis of the two novels, where I have researched horizontal literary connections between them through close reading of both novel’s structural and thematical measures. As a theoretical backdrop for the thesis, the self-presentation theory by Erving Goffman, as well as Stephen P. Hinshaw's research on shame and stigma associated with mental illness, have been central. These have been brought forth through the discussion of the thesis, where it is discussed what insights, the novels can give us about teenagers dealing with a sick parent. Here it is highlighted, among other things, that they experience loneliness, shame and fear related to the situation they find themselves in, and why this is relevant to the real life.
