Abstract
This bachelor thesis examines alternative methods for Statkraft to upgrade its control systemsand address some challenges with existing solutions and methods. Standardization and im-proved documentation are examples of elements that can help ensure such development. Thisreport investigates the possibilities of standardizing control system solutions for hydropowerplants and how Statkraft could potentially benefit from this for both existing and new facilities.
Documentation formats can vary between power industries based on functionality and docu-mentation requirements. Several companies use SCD and P&ID to clearly display equipmentand control structures. This report examines the advantages and disadvantages of these docu-mentation formats.
The NEK IEC 61850 standard has been effectively implemented in the power grid in variousparts of the world, including Norway. The connection between the 61850 standard and func-tion blocks is demonstrated to emphasize the clarity and reusability that the standard canprovide. Therefore, the report will investigate the use of the 61850-7 series to standardizecommunication and data flow in the hydropower plant and how it can be combined with func-tion blocks. It will also explore how the tag structure of 61850 can aid in clarity and data flow.Function blocks are crucial for standardization and reusability, and they can help ensure uni-form software across hydropower plants. This report explores the advantages and disadvanta-ges of implementing function blocks in the software and how they can be integrated with the61850 standard to create consistency across disciplines.
The report concludes that SCD and P&ID can be effective documentation formats in hydro-power plants, and the use of function blocks can be critical for programming. Additionally, the report finds that combining the 61850 standard and function blocks can lead to a higherlevel of understanding across disciplines. Other measures, such as framework agreements anda dedicated programming department, are also highlighted as they can increase the lifespanand ensure a more uniform design of facilities.
