Beyond the Stone: The Fear of Historical Amnesia surrounding the Colston and Rhodes Statues Controversy

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven undersøker konflikten rundt statuene av Edward Colston og Cecil Rhodes i dagens Storbritannia, innenfor konteksten av rasisme, det britiske imperiet, og Brexit. Den analyseres diskursene og kontroversene som omgir veltingen av disse statuene med tanke på de bredere implikasjonene for raselikhet. Gjennom et minnestudieperspektiv utforsker oppgaven hvordan det nåværende politiske klimaet former oppfatningen og erindringen av historiske personer, og argumenterer for at fjerningen av Colston- og Rhodes-statuene representerer en større kamp for raserettferdighet, samtidig som den erkjenner kompleksiteten ved å endre tolkninger av fortiden. Til slutt argumenterer den for at bestridelsen rundt disse statuene illustrerer en frykt for «historical amnesia», ettersom både forsvarere og motstandere av statuene frykter at deres respektive fortellinger, kollektive minner, og identitet glemmes.

This thesis examines the conflict surrounding the statues of Edward Colston and Cecil Rhodes in contemporary Britain, within the context of racism, Empire, and Brexit. It analyzes the discourses and controversies generated by the toppling of these statues, considering the broader implications for racial equality. Through a memory studies perspective, the thesis explores how the current political climate shapes the perception and remembrance of historical figures, arguing that the removal of the Colston and Rhodes statues represents a larger struggle for racial justice, while acknowledging the complexities of altering interpretations of the past. Finally, it argues that the contestations surrounding the Rhodes and Colston statues highlight a fear of historical amnesia, as both defenders and opponents of the statues fear the potential erasure of their respective narratives, collective memories, and identity.
