This thesis offers insight as to how Draco Malfoy goes from being an unpopular antagonist in the Harry Potter series, to an agreeable protagonist in fanfiction. In the world of fanfiction, rewriting Draco Malfoy is a common occurrence, and it is especially common to write him as a love interest to the heroes of the original books – despite J. K. Rowling ardently contesting that such an occurrence would ever have happened with her characters. Nevertheless, by examining three works of fanfiction where Draco Malfoy is Hermione Granger’s love-interest, this thesis demonstrates how elements from the field of cognitive psychology - Attribution Theory and Affective Disposition Theory – influence readers’ moral justification for morally ambiguous behaviour. Essentially, Draco Malfoy becomes a favoured love-interest because he shares a common goal with the reader: to ensure Hermione Granger’s well-being.
