"A Handshake in Ulster": A Mnemonic Study of Ireland's Troubled Past and Present

Abstract

Denne oppgaven analyserer minne og identitet i Nord-Irland, og hvordan Irland's problematiske fortid– spesielt i forhold til 'the Troubles'– har ført til konflikt rundt irsk identitet. For å illustrere dette, viser oppgaven til den historiske konteksten bak the Troubles, og undersøker deretter kontroversen rundt håndtrykket mellom dronning Elizabeth II og Martin McGuinness i tillegg til andre manifestasjoner og representasjoner av minne både gjennom the Troubles og i moderne tid, ved å bruke eksempler fra irsk politikk, musikk/poesi og andre minnemarkeringer.

This thesis analyses memory and identity in Northern Ireland, and how its troubled past– especially in regards to the Troubles– has led to contention regarding Irish identity. To illustrate this, the thesis first shows the historical context of the Troubles, and then examines the controversy of the handshake between Queen Elizabeth II and Martin McGuinness in addition to other manifestations and representations of memory both throughout the Troubles and in contemporary times, using examples from Irish politics, music/poetry and other acts of commemoration.
