Carbon dioxide removal in biomethane production
Abstract
The main objective of this project has been the preliminary design and optimization of the biogasupgrading stage as part of an LBM production process. An approach from the point of view ofchemical engineering has been given to the process, carrying out the design of the basic andconceptual engineering, with the aim of obtaining as a result an efficient process and with adequatecontrol of its operation and safety.Moving forward, a preliminary optimization was carried out making use of the informationobtained in the sensitivity analyses. On the other hand, from an engineering point of view, it must be ensured that the plant satisfiesthe operating requirements, even in the presence of external influences. For this reason, a controlsolution has been successfully carried out, as well as its corresponding representation in a P&IDdiagram.Likewise, plant safety management is crucial in any industrial plant, and especially with thehandling of toxic substances. For this reason, a study of the safety in the operation of the strippingcolumn has been carried out using the HazOp methodology. The different sources of danger havebeen identified and actions or implementation of safeguards have been proposed to avoid and/oralleviate these situations. The purge stream of CO2 and H2S resulting from the regeneration of the solvent was identified. This stream cannot be released into the atmosphere without being treated to comply with theimposed regulations. On the other hand, an alternative solution is to give it an economic output byapplying a treatment process. The proposed treatment process consists of 4 stages; dehydration, separation of CO2 and H2S, conversion of H2S to S through the Claus process, and finally theliquefaction of CO2. In this way, both S and CO2 can be sold to different interested parties, usuallyto other chemical plants that can use these substances as raw materials to produce their products.
