Madness and Gender Relations in "The Yellow Wallpaper"

Abstract

Oppgaven belyser kvinners psykiske helse og kjønnsrelasjonene på 1900-tallet gjennom novellen "The Yellow Wallpaper" av Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Gjennom tekstanalyse, noen biografiske elementer fra Gilman, samt den historiske og sosiale konteksten på 1900-tallet, argumenterer oppgaven hvordan de patriarkalske kjønnrelasjonene og det at kvinner ble sett på som "sinnssyke" og "hysteriske" var gjensidig forsterkende.

This thesis sheds light on women's mental health and the gender relations in the nineteenth century through Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story "The Yellow Wallpaper." Through textual analysis of the short story, some of Gilman's biographical elements, as well as historical and social context of the nineteenth-century, the thesis argues how the patriarchal gender relations and how women were viewed as "mad" and "hysterical" were mutually reinforcing.
