dc.description.abstract | This thesis looks at the culture and the aRtudes in the popular music of West Germany after the second world war, from Schlager-musikk to Neue Deutsche Welle [NDW]. The goal is to find a common thread that can explain why german was not established on a broad mainstream front of music before the 1980s. The text utilizes literary sources and text- analysis to show the development in how german is applied in song lyrics in popular music, and the circumstances behind this development.
The thesis finds that Schlager-music, and later Rock are the two dominant popular musics aTer the second world war, and that the music with german lyrics largely consists of Schlager-music, and Rock largely consists of English lyrics. There are exceptions, but in the big picture, Schlager-music has been a dominating force in defining what german popular music. NDW is a reaction to both: The conservative attitudes of Schlager-music, and the American influences of Rock. NDW was a self-conscious movement with the intent of creating a new, german music, and established the german language on a broader mainstream front beyond only Schlager-music.
