Hilfling-samlingen – utvalg, digitisering og formidling

Abstract

Denne oppgaven undersøker samlingsforvaltningen av fotosamlingen Hilfling-samlingen ved NTNU Universitetsbiblioteket på Dora. For å diskutere samlingsforvaltningen ved Dorabiblioteket undersøker jeg tre steg i samlingsforvaltningsprosessen: Utvalgsprosessen, digitiseringsprosessen og formidlingsprosessen. I utvalgsprosessen undersøker jeg hvorfor Dorabiblioteket har valgt ut Hilfling-samlingen til digitisering og formidling. I digitiseringsprosessen undersøker jeg hvordan Dorabiblioteket digitiserer Hilfling-samlingen. Til slutt undersøker jeg i formidlingsprosessen hvordan Dorabiblioteket formidler Hilfling-samlingen. Gjennom oppgaven diskuterer jeg muligheter og utfordringer med å forvalte en fotosamling. I oppgaven bruker jeg kvalitativ metode i form av dybdeintervju, og deltakende observasjon som metode som kilder for å undersøke disse tre prosessene. Hilfling-samlingen er et arkiv etter den kjente fotografen Jens Carl Fredrik Hilfling-Rasmussen. Arkivet er den største fotosamlingen etter én fotograf ved Dorabiblioteket, og har rundt 120 000 glassplatenegativer. Hilfling-Rasmussen drev fra 1910 forretning i Trondheim. I sin tid var han var en populær portrettfotograf, og i dag er han populær blant lokalbefolkningen i og rundt Trondheim som ønsker å se bilder tatt av slektningene sine. Publikum får se disse fotografiene ved at Hilfling-samlingen blir digitisert og tilgjengeliggjort på NTNU Universitetsbibliotekets database gunnerus.no.

This thesis investigates the collection management of the Hilfling photo collection at the NTNU University Library at Dora. To discuss the collection management at Dora Library, I examine three steps in the collection management process: the selection process, the digitization process, and the dissemination process. In the selection process, I investigate why the Dora Library has selected the Hilfling collection for digitization and dissemination. In the digitization process, I examine how the Dora Library digitizes the Hilfling collection. Finally, in the dissemination process, I examine how the Dora Library disseminates the Hilfling collection. Through this thesis, I discuss opportunities and challenges with managing a photo collection. In the thesis, I use a qualitative method in the form of in-depth interviews, and participant observation as a method to investigate these three processes. The Hilfling collection is an archive of the famous photographer Jens Carl Fredrik Hilfling-Rasmussen. The archive is the largest photo collection by one photographer at the Dora Library and has around 120 000 glass plate negatives. Hilfling-Rasmussen ran a business in Trondheim from 1910. In his time, he was a popular portrait photographer, and today he is popular among local people in and around Trondheim who want to see pictures of their relatives. The public can see these photographs since the Hilfling collection is being digitized and made available on the NTNU University Library's database gunnerus.no.
