Optimal design and operation of CCS value chains with a focus on the transport system
Abstract
Summary of the thesis
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a critical climate change mitigation tool for the world economy. Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 demands a rapid deployment of available abatement technologies, where CCS can contribute to a cost-efficient decarbonization pathway.
This thesis is a collection of papers investigating the optimal design of CCS value chains for various transport volumes and the synergy effects of shared decarbonization targets for the industrial and power sector. The research aims to provide new insights into capacity expansions in the CCS value chains. The contributions span from special case studies of optimal investments under operational uncertainty in a Norwegian CO2 transport and storage chain to the optimal deployment of CCS in the European power and industry. The presented models and analysis consider the effects of short-term variations and long-term development trends in optimal decision-making.
In the developed mathematical models, techniques from several research fields are incorporated. Detailed techno-economic studies are performed to give a correct representation of the costs presented in our problems. Statistical methods are used in the model to signify the uncertain reality we face when making investment decisions, and binary decision variables are used to represent the real features of capacity expansion decisions and routing of ships.
