In recent years, mathematical modelling has become relevant in Norway with the introduction of the new curriculum, LK20, where modelling and application are one of the core elements of mathematics. The core elements are the main competence and shall characterize both the teaching and the assessment in the subject. Several researchers conclude that the teacher is the most important when the pupils acquire modelling competence. In contrary to the researchers’ recommendations, didactic studies show that mathematical modelling is not being used enough in the classroom. The same studies point out that teachers find it challenging to teach mathematical modelling. If we are to achieve the goals of the new curriculum, it must therefore be ensured that the teachers gain the necessary teaching competence in mathematical modelling.
This master's thesis looks at mathematical modelling from the teacher's perspective. The research question "What perceived challenges do two teachers face in the work on an 8th grade modelling activity?" aimed to gain insight into the knowledge and experiences teachers have with modelling activities, to better understand what knowledge and competence the teachers need to obtain to teach mathematical modelling.
To answer the research question, the data was obtained through interviews and observation. The two teachers who participated in the study were interviewed both before and after the work on the modelling activity. During the modelling activity, the class was observed, and audio recordings were made of the two focus groups. The data was analyzed after Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis (2012). The framework for the analysis was Borromeo Ferri and Blum (Borromeo Ferri, 2018; 2009b) who have researched what didactic knowledge teachers need to teach mathematical modelling. The analysis and interpretation of the data gave me three findings.
I found that the two teachers in the survey (1) had little experience with mathematical modelling, both theoretically and practically, (2) that the teachers found it challenging to find modelling assignments that are adapted to the student group and current curriculum goals, and (3) that it is difficult to prepare and ask good questions to guide the pupils during the work with modelling activities.
The main finding in the master's thesis is that the teachers find their lack of experience in both theory and activities as an obstacle when it comes to using the modelling activities in the classroom. In other words, the results show the teachers have a need for expanding their competence to achieve the intentions of the core element of modelling and application in the curriculum.
