dc.description.abstract
South Korea went through intense urban expansion in the last century and quickly developed a mass of low-rise settlements in a packed way until the 1980s. It is the fine-grained urban area in decline nowadays. In face of decreasing population, falling business and decaying built environment, the South Korean government seeks for its restoration with better provision of public services including public space. But the transformation goals and specific approaches remain to be explored. There is a lack of knowledge of this kind of special urban form as a prerequisite for further actions. This thesis aims for a deep understanding of the public space in all aspects to contribute to the reevaluation of the fine-grained urban area. The fine-grained urban area has a congested spatial pattern which greatly compresses the public space. Based on the global discussion on the definition of public space, the concept exceeds the South Korean official types set by ownership and function to adopt three dimensions of use, access and form in this thesis. Both quantitative and qualitative studies of the public space in part of Sangyeok-3-Dong, Daegu are conducted regarding physical, economic, social and cultural aspects to acquire its actual conditions, inactive usage patterns due to the conflict among people, traffic and parking, and main challenges of bad provision, use and management. It also sheds light on how the provision and management are concerned about by the public and private sectors to figure out how changes can take place. The outcome is pessimistic, as their viewpoints turn out to be quite different and even opposite. While the government appeals for different groups’ contributions to the comprehensive progress, the individuals are only limitedly interested in some direct results and mainly expect the government performance. There are many practical problems on the way. Key Words: Public Space, Fine-Grained Urban Area, Urban Regeneration, South Korea
