dc.description.abstractThe global green transition is resulting in various forms of new regional development, as a growing point of interest in academic literature and policymaking. This thesis explores the development of the Norwegian battery manufacturing industry in Arendal (Agder) and Mo i Rana (Nordland) through the lens of green path creation. The purpose of this thesis is to establish the enabling and constraining contexts behind this emerging path. It aims to do so by employing a broader perspective on path creation, using a mixed theoretical framework of evolutionary economic geography and global production network approaches. The qualitative case studies are informed by a series of interviews that have been triangulated with relevant secondary data. The research has revealed variations between path creation in both regions under study, but also many similarities, doing so by identifying several key enablers and constraints posed to the regional development of the industrial paths based on pre-existing structures, conditions and agents of change. Furthermore, it identifies the path creation is the product of endogenous processes based in part on firm branching, combined with extra-regional resources.
