dc.description.abstract | The aviation industry accounts for about 4-5 % of the total global greenhouse gas emissions. A transition to electrical propulsion methods can greatly reduce emissions, however
provides several challenges regarding thermal behaviour. In this thesis a CFD simulation
was performed to analyse the air flow in the air gap with varying heights, rotor speeds
and axial flow. The existence of Taylor vortices was found to impact the heat transfer rate
significantly and provide better cooling than flow with no vortices. Increasing the rotor
speed will increase the flow velocity of the Taylor vortices and lead to greater heat transfer.
A consequence of the square nature of vortices between two surfaces is that small air gaps
produce a higher number of vortices than larger gaps, this leads to an increased heat transfer
rate for smaller air gaps over larger gaps. Adding an axial air flow leads to the destruction
of Taylor vortices which, depending on the air gap height, can decrease the heat transfer
rate. Generally though, an increase in axial velocity yields from a cold inlet will increase the
heat transfer rate significantly. A surface to surface radiation simulation was also performed
and the radiative heat transfer rate can consist of up to 22 % of the total heat transfer rate
leaving the rotor and is largest for small air gaps, decreasing significantly with increasing
gap height. | |
